Watch Dr. Richard Polin Discuss the Global Health Initiative

Austria

The American Austrian Foundation Medical Seminars were initiated in 1995. Supported jointly by the Austrian government and George Soros, the seminars have trained more than 8,000 doctors from 44 Eastern European countries. Since 1998 Dr. Richard Polin has been responsible for organizing the seminar on Maternal and Infant Health. Academicians from Departments of Obstetrics and Pediatrics in the United States and Austria are recruited to teach 30-40 fellows from former Soviet republics who attend weeklong seminars in Salzburg Austria. The seminars are conducted in English and all travel and conference center expenses are covered. In addition, the fellows are encouraged to organize satellite seminars in their respective countries. Dr. Polin has led seminars in Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg and Samara), Mongolia, Hungary, Krzygstan, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania and Poland. Finally, each fellow has the opportunity to do an internship in Austria and several have had observer-ships in the United States.
