Resident Life

Where We Live

Our residents live throughout Manhattan and surrounding areas, including New Jersey and Long Island City. The public transportation system is accessible and reliable, with a subway stop directly outside the hospital entrance.

While real estate in Manhattan can be expensive, our residents are able to live comfortably on the provided salary and additional housing bonus!

NewYork-Presbyterian offers on-campus, affordable housing on a first come, first served basis for those interested.

Life in New York City

New York City is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and our residents take full advantage of all it has to offer. Through benefits as a New York-Presbyterian Hospital employee and our Columbia University affiliation, residents enjoy discounts to sporting events, museums, fitness studios, and entertainment. We are strongly committed to resident wellness and ensure that there is scheduled time off embedded in our scheduling. Examples include senior admitting residents and junior admitting residents having Fridays off when they are on these rotations, and wellness half-days built into the ambulatory pediatrics rotation.

Resident Wellness Committee

The CHONY resident-run wellness committee, alongside the residency program, is devoted to improving resident wellbeing and work-life balance through morning and noon conferences on topics such as mindfulness, core values, de-stressing and creative arts therapy.

Additionally, there are a multitude of organized activities throughout the year such as apple picking excursions, happy hours and socials, the annual Great CHONY Bakeoff, and bimonthly holiday parties parties. Class retreats are also a feature of our program, where every year one call-free weekend is set aside for each class to engage in team building and class retreat fun!
