Albert D. Anderson, M.D.
Dr. Albert D. Anderson,
the A. David Gurewitsch Professor Emeritus of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine, died Feb. 8, 1993. Disabled from a progressive neurological disorder, Dr. Anderson established Harlem Hospital Center's rehabilitation medicine program.
A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science,
Dr. Anderson received a bachelor's degree from Columbia College and his medical degree from Harvard. He joined the
P&S faculty in 1966, when
he became director of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Harlem Hospital. He was named the Gurewitsch Professor in 1979.
He became consultant to the dean for medical education at Harlem Hospital in 1979, and he served for
several years on the P&S Admissions Committee.
He was vice president and president of the medical board at Harlem Hospital
in the 1970s.
Dr. Anderson started
training in surgery, after being diagnosed with intrinsic cord disease, then turned to internal medicine after he
was diagnosed with syrinx. He became interested in rehabilitation medicine while training in internal medicine. After a rehabilitation
residency at Montefiore Hospital, Dr. Anderson joined the staff at Harlem Hospital.
He received many honors for his work. In 1978, Harlem Hospital honored him on "Albert D. Anderson Day" and named a wing for him
in the Martin Luther King Pavilion. By then Dr. Anderson was confined to
a wheelchair and nearly
paralyzed from his illness.
