What do I need to do to get an ID?

If you are a new employee, please see your Department Administrator. Once you have been entered in the system, come to our office with a government-issued picture ID (driver's license or passport).

I need a new University ID card because ...

I'm an employee.

All employees must have a current profile in DIA (Delegated Identity Administration) before receiving a University ID card. If you are a new employee, or if you are a continuing employee whose profile has expired, please speak with your Department Administrator.

I'm a student.

Students may receive the University ID only upon proof of registration. Please check with Student Administrative Services if you are having trouble registering. If we cannot verify your registration through Student Services Online, you can bring in a hard copy of your registration.

I'm an alumnus/alumna.

Alumni reading cards are being issued by the Library Information Office, located in 201 Butler Library. Please visit their
website for more information.

I'm an emeritus/emerita faculty/retiree.

Retired faculty and staff may receive a University ID Card as long as the retired status can be verified in DIA. If we are not able to confirm your retired status, please contact your Department Administrator.

I lost my card.

Please call the ID Office at 212.305.0238 as soon as you realize you lost your card. After business hours, please call CUMC Public Safety at 212.305.8100. A replacement card can be issued for a $20 fee.

My wallet was stolen, along with my card.

If you submit a copy of a police report, we will replace your Medical Center ID Card at no charge.

I don't like my picture.

A new picture can be taken and a new ID issued for a $20 card replacement fee. You will be given two chances at a new photo. The fee will be waived only if:
  • your appearance has changed drastically since the original picture was taken;
  • the original picture is of exceptionally poor quality; or
  • a CUMC security officer stopped you because of your picture.

My name has changed.

If you have changed your name, please ask your Department Administrator to update your information in DIA (Delegated Identity Administration). If the name change is not appearing in DIA, bring your old ID showing your previous name and a copy of your marriage certificate, social security card, or other government identification which verifies your new name.

I changed departments within Columbia.

Ask your new Department Administrator to add you to their population in DIA (Delegated Identity Administration). Once the change can be verified in DIA we will print you a new ID. You must turn in your old ID before you can receive a new one.

My old card was damaged.

Any card that has been bent, broken, hole-punched, sat on, or that shows any noticeable signs of neglect or damage, will be replaced for a $20 fee. Please do not keep your card in your wallet in your back pocket. Cards that appear to otherwise be in good condition will be replaced once and we will waive the fee. Any subsequent replacements for damaged cards, regardless of its outward appearance, will be charged the $20 fee.

Can I get access to ...

The CUMC ID Office does not grant access to either the
Bard Athletic Center or the Dodge Fitness Center. Please contact them for more information.

All full-time faculty, staff and students should have access to the Columbia libraries. Alumni reading cards are being issued by the

Can I use my Medical Center ID at the Morningside Campus?

All University ID Cards, including the Medical Center ID Cards, are accepted at the Morningside Campus. For specific access to the Morningside Campus, ask your Department Administrator to request the additional access at

Can I get any discounts with my new ID?

Please see the
CU Arts Initiative website for more information on the Passport to New York program. At the time, discounts only apply to students with a current registration sticker.

Do I have to be registered to receive an ID?

All new and continuing students must be registered before receiving a University ID Card. Please check with
Student Administrative Services if you are having trouble registering. If we cannot verify your registration through Student Services Online, you can bring in a hard copy of your registration.

What's a UNI? What's my UNI?

The UNI (University Network ID) acts as your Columbia email account. We may ask you for your UNI to quickly and accurately find you in our ID system. Ask your Department Administrator for your UNI.
