The goal of our residency program is to train competent psychiatrists who are well-educated in all areas of psychiatry leading them to board certification by The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

Program Aims

  • The Harlem Hospital Psychiatry Residency Training Program aims to produce competent, efficient physician leaders in the field of medicine, committed to serving the underserved. Our program promotes quality, patient safety, and best practices for mental health treatment. Our residents and faculty are aware of the role of academic teaching and research in improving treatments for our patients.
  • Our residents and faculty are skilled in navigating and utilizing the spectrum of services in the community-based system of care. They utilize recovery-based strategies and are  committed to shared-decision making with patients, collaborative care of medical and mental health problems, reducing disparities in access to care, and valuing the role of unique individual and cultural factors.
  • Our residents will learn to provide various modalities of trauma informed treatment, addiction treatment, treatment of comorbid medical problems, in addition to the breadth of treatments available in the field.
