International Affairs Office (IAO)
International faculty and officers of research make up a significant portion of the Columbia University Medical Center community. There are two offices at Columbia serving international scholars, personnel, and students: the International Affairs Office (IAO) on the Medical Center Campus, and the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) on the Morningside Campus.
The International Affairs Office serves the immigration-related needs of scholars, personnel, and students at CUMC. IAO staff members assist prospective and hired/enrolled international scholars, personnel, and students with initial and continuing visa documentation.
The IAO sponsors F-1, J-1, H-1, O-1, and TN-1 visas and prepares visa documentation for accompanying family members. All visa documentation for individuals working or studying at the Medical Center Campus must be processed through the IAO (with the exception of students in the Mailman School of Public Health and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, who work through the ISSO).
Throughout the year, IAO broadcasts announcements to professors, scholars, departmental administrators, other personnel, and students pertaining to current immigration-related issues. (Where appropriate, these announcements are also made available at right under “Updates.”) The IAO also conducts and sponsors immigration, employment, and tax-related workshops, and provides information for scholars and students about social, cultural, and other activities offered by the ISSO.
The IAO is open for walk-in consultations and appointments from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
