II. Registration Instructions

A. How?
Set up your Columbia email account by activating your UNI (University Network ID). E-mail accounts and UNI's are crucial to gaining access to the Columbia University community. Your UNI is your Columbia virtual ID, equivalent to a username or log-on on other systems. It is preassigned, usually based on your initials and an arbitrary number (i.e. Sam Doe's UNI might be sd2036). Go to http://uni.columbia.edu/ to activate your UNI. This website will allow you to first search for your UNI (as it has already been created based on your confirmation to enroll at MSPH and you can find it by searching by your first and last name). The site will describe the activation process. Attention newly admitted international students: You will need a temporary access number in order to activate your UNI. After you have paid your deposit, please contact the Office of Student Affairs at msph-osa@columbia.edu or 212-305-3927 in order to obtain this access number.

Second, consult with your department. It is through your department that academic advising (course sequencing, etc) occurs. Please click here (pdf) for contact information for your department. For new students, you will meet with your department during orientation. After you meet with your department, you will know the courses for which you should register.

Next, use the online "Course Offerings and Descriptions" website at http://www.mailmanschool.org/courses/index.asp for specific course information relevant to the semester in which you are registering. Use our registration form (pdf) to plan your program and to obtain necessary signatures (see "Permission," below). Keep a copy for your files and give a copy to your department.

Finally, go to the Student Services On-Line (SSOL) webpage at https://ssol.columbia.edu/ and obtain your registration appointments (specific times on particular days when you are able to register). Return to SSOL during one of your registration appointments (see "Academic Calendar" for basic information on dates).

Students may add or drop courses during the "Change of Program" period (see more details below under "Academic Calendar.") Students adding a course (during the "change of program" period) must have attended at least one session of the course in order for registration to be valid.

B. Cross-Registration
For MSPH students, to register for any class in the University, you need approval from your adviser, then approval from the school where you wish to take the class. Cross registration is done on paper and during change of program period. For non-MSPH students, you must obtain permission from the department in whose class you wish to enroll. This form must be signed by a representative of the student academic affairs staff, and then you will need to bring it to the registrar that serves your school.

C. Permission (to take certain courses)
If a "Permission required" appears in the "Course Notes" column of the course schedule, you will need the permission of the department offering the course. Students should gain permission from the department coordinator (pdf) in the department where the course is offered.. The department may be able to give permission at the time you inquire, or may have to wait-list you. If you are wait-listed the department will confirm your status during the "Change of Program" period (add/drop). In either case, your name will be on record with the department and only those who have obtained permission will be able to enroll. If a student fails to gain permission, he/she may be asked to leave the course.

D. Academic Calendar
Academic Calendar (pdf)
Please pay close attention to the dates listed on the academic calendar. The change of program (add/drop) period, holidays and dates by which to submit applications to graduate are just some of the essential information included there. Financial implications are tied to registration and changing your program of study after certain dates. It is important to be aware of how these modifications to your registration are connected to the calendar. Students are responsible for all the information contained within this document. For example, late fees are charged to students registering after the "registration dates" described above.
