| Description: |
Provides training for comprehensive physiatric evaluations and exposure to the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Objectives: To provide increased diagnostic skills and increased awareness and understanding of physiatric approach to medicine and the various aspects of this field.
Learning Experience: The majority of the time will be spent participating in various outpatient clinics including: Muscular dystrophy, Spinal Injury, Amputee, Musculoskeletal, Brace, Pediatric and Electromyography. Time will also be spent on the Rehabilitation consult service, the inpatient Rehabilitation floor, pulmonary exercise lab as well as various outpatient offices with the Rehabilitation Attendings. The student will attend clinical conferences and tutorial seminars. One week can be spent at the Weill Cornell campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Feedback: Throughout the elective the preceptor will review student's patient workup, ward rounds and general clinical competence. Areas of need will be identified and sessions in readings, lectures, studies will be undertaken. The student is given sufficient opportunity to offer critique regarding direction and emphasis of the elective and the flexibility to alter the schedule based on their area of interest.
Evaluation: Students will be judged on the following points: leadership, motivation, initiative, quality of work, clinical judgment, attendance, patient management, presentation and ability to communicate with staff and patients. |

| RH02P Child with Long Term Illness |

| Description: |
Enable student to work directly in total management of children struggling to adjust to long term and disabling diseases.
Objective: to broaden student's scope of knowledge in care of children with long term illnesses through comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to patient care in: Rehabilitation Medicine, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Neurology, Speech Pathology, Psychology, Physical, Occupational and Recreational Therapy, Social Service and Education.
Learning Experience: as a subintern jointly with resident and attending staff of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, do admission workup, history and physical; observe patients in education, recreation, active physical, occupational and speech therapies which are an integral part of the program. Students work closely with children and learn first hand the effects of these forms of treatment. Regular clinical conferences, introductory lectures and ward rounds will supplement this.

| RH04P Rehabilitation of People with Spinal Cord Injury |

| Description: |
This elective will introduce the student to the field of rehabilitation medicine as it applies to people disabled by spinal cord injury.
Objective: To expose the student to the medical, physical, and psychological management of people with various degrees of para and quadriplegia within the model of rehabilitation medicine.
Exposure to the rehabilitation team approach incorporating physical, occupational, speech, recreational therapies, nursing, psychology and social work will be emphasized.
Learning Experience: The student will learn the various medical complications resulting from spinal cord injury and how they may be prevented, evaluated and treated. The student will also learn how physical and occupational therapies are used to reduce impairments and disabilities of spinal cord injured patients. The attending physician will teach during patient rounds and be available to discuss specific topics of student interest at other times. The student will evaluate new admissions with a resident physician and learn how to assess impairment and disability, and formulate a plan of therapy designed to maximize patients' functional recovery.
Feedback: Continuous throughout the elective.
Evaluation: Will be based on a consensus of all faculty members involved in the student's education in this course.
Housing: students can be boarded at the hospital (3 months notice required).
