| Description: |
Objective: To provide students with extensive training and experience in providing reproductive health services in primary care settings.
Learning Experience: Students will participate in discussions and clinical care covering all current and novel contraceptive technologies in detail as well as related topics including abortion, sexuality, domestic violence, STD's, and health education and counseling. Students will also spend at least five half‑day sessions per week caring for patients under supervision by a preceptor in order to improve their skills in examining female patients and to acquire contraceptive technology skills. The main site for the didactic and clinical experience will be the Family Planning and Young Adult Clinics. Additional sites will be used to teach abortion skills.
Feedback and Evaluation: Each student will be expected to choose a topic for in depth study and to give a brief report on that topic. Students will have individual supervision during patient care, and also guidance in the study of their individual areas of interest. Students who speak Spanish will get the most from this experience.

This elective is designed to provide exposure to a range of ambulatory care activities and issues in obstetrics and gynecology.
Objective: The primary focus of the program will be the provision of ambulatory care services to adult and adolescent women and include the range of obstetrical, gynecological and family planning services now provided.
Learning Experience: The student will see patients in our clinics.
Particular emphasis will be given to antepartum care, basic primary and preventive gynecologic care and management of the menopausal woman. In this area, students will attend daytime clinics aimed at providing prenatal, postpartum, gynecological and family planning care for this high-risk group. Supervision will be by attending preceptors and evaluation by course faculty.
Feedback: Continuous throughout the elective.
Evaluation: Will be based on a consensus of all faculty members involved in the student's education in this course.

Learning Experience: The students works on a daily basis with the physicians, attending office hours, labor and delivery, clinics, and operating room.

| Description: |
Objectives: To provide senior medical students with the variety of sonographic techniques employed by us to reveal the anatomy and pathology of the female reproductive system as well as the developing fetus.
Learning Experience: The student will be attending the high-risk antenatal clinic and have access to ultrasound examination on these high-risk patients, when this test is needed.
The student will also have exposure to the biophysical scoring and the non-stress tests done on this group of patients.
It seems of utmost importance that every medical student be familiar with this important diagnostic tool, with all its fascinating opportunities to provide the practicing obstetrician, gynecologist and radiologist with information considered to be of tremendous importance and value in the diagnostic algorithm.
The student will be exposed to a large clinical material (50-70 scans per day) and supervised by the attending physician covering the service as well as some of the skilled diagnostic sonographers.
Interested students may be part of ongoing clinical research protocols dealing with sono-embryology, fetal doppler flow studies, fetal brain scans, gynecological scans (uterus, ovaries. etc.) as well as sonographically-guided puncture procedures performed in obstetrics and gynecology.

Objectives: To introduce the student to this unique subspecialty that provides complete cancer care to patients with female genital malignancies.
Learning Experience: Different modalities, such as radical pelvic surgery, bowel and urinary tract surgery, plastic surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, are utilized to treat gynecologic malignancies and their complications.
Student elective includes in-patient experience in the operating room and on the ward, outpatient clinic, pathologic review, and gynecologic tumor conference.
Case study and literature review may also be undertaken.

Objective: After completing the clerkship, students should be able to diagnose and treat major reproductive endocrine problems as related to the menstrual cycle and infertility. Students will also be exposed to the surgical aspects of infertility treatment and new reproductive technology (In Vitro Fertilization, etc.).
Learning Experience: Participants will attend the Sloane Endocrine Clinic. They will scrub on operative cases, observe IVF retrievals and attend specialty conferences and seminars.
Feedback: Students will receive feedback during their clinical activities. Once a week all clinic patients are discussed in detail with the attending on service. Specific reading will be assigned. |

Objective: To provide senior medical students who may be contemplating a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology an opportunity to spend time with the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, to learn and experience the full range of clinical management that is encompassed by this subspecialty.
Learning Experience: The student will have an opportunity to interact with MFM Divisional faculty in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine private practice offices at our East 60th and Irving Pavilion locations, and at the High Risk Obstetrics Clinic on PH-12. Additionally, the student will work with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty covering the Labor & Delivery suite and the Antepartum and Postpartum units to gain a full exposure to complicated inpatient obstetrics. Additional time may also be spent at any of our 4 advanced Obstetric Ultrasound units in which the student will gain experience at diagnosing congenital fetal abnormalities, counseling patients with abnormalities, and participating in invasive prenatal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. If desired, the student may also spend an evening or a weekend shift working on the Labor and Delivery suite with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty. The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine consists of 14 attending physicians and 6 fellows. The Division manages an extremely large High Risk Obstetric Clinical practice, and 4 large Obstetric Ultrasound units. As well as this clinical management, the student will be able to interact at regular Maternal Fetal Medicine meetings including the Prenatal Pediatric meeting, the combined Maternal-Fetal Medicine Neonatal meeting, the Clinical Maternal-Fetal Medicine meeting.
Feedback: This is provided by continuous feedback and discussion throughout the elective.
Evaluation: A written evaluation is provided upon completion of the elective based on the consensus of all faculty members involved in the student's education course. |

St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital consists of two facilities providing prenatal services at both sites. All deliveries (approximately 6000 per year) are performed at the Roosevelt Hospital site located at 10th Avenue and 59th St.
Objective: This course is focused on developing skills in Obstetrics and Maternal‑Fetal Medicine.
Learning Experience: The course is structured and consists of the following components: 1) Evaluation and management of hospitalized antepartum patients 2) Triage and management of patients on the labor unit 3) Sonographic evaluation of patients in the Maternal‑Fetal Evaluation unit: About 2,000 ultrasound examinations are performed each month, allowing "hands‑on" experience for the course participant to learn the basics of prenatal assessment. 4) Prenatal care in the Obstetrical High‑Risk clinics. 5) Daily labor and delivery rounds and assessment and management of obstetric patients. 6) Obstetrical anesthesia of high risk patients. 7) Prenatal genetic counseling and diagnosis. During the rotation, the student is required to research and discuss topics in MFM, and present them during rounds.

This preceptorship provides the opportunity to participate in the complete management of patients with precancerous and invasive lesions of the pelvic organs on inpatient and outpatient bases.
Objectives: To become familiar with diagnostic techniques and therapeutic modalities in gynecologic oncology.
Learning Experience: Student is assigned to Gynecologic Oncology Service and will become an integral member of the team participating in the pre-treatment evaluation, assists at surgery, in the chemotherapeutic and radiation management of these patients and postoperative care.
The student will attend the Gynecologic Tumor Board and Colposcopy Clinics at both St. Luke's and Roosevelt Sites.
A presentation requiring clinical review or literature survey on gynecologic cancer will be carried out under supervision.
Feedback: Student works in direct association with the Gynecology-Oncology Service and assigned residents.
The student will receive feedback during the entire elective.
Evaluation: Based on entire elective and will be concerned with basic knowledge in gynecologic oncology and participation in the elective. |

Objectives: Students should become adept at routine obstetrical delivery and routine gynecological cases, as well as the functioning of the specialty outpatient clinics.
Learning Experience: Provides an opportunity to participate in in-patient and out-patient obstetrical and gynecological care, including delivery of patients under direct supervision, and assisting in the gynecological operating room during surgical procedures. The rotation is four weeks in total. Students will be assigned to St. Luke’s Hospital for two weeks, doing one week each of Obsetrtrics and Gynecology. The remaining two weeks will be spent at
Roosevelt
hospital, also one week each of Obstetrics and Gynecology. While on obstetrics, the student will participate in ultrasonography, fetal monitoring, routine antepartum care and delivery, and routine and complicated postpartum care. Students will be expected to keep the same hours as their team which may vary on a daily basis. Three overnight on - calls and one weekend on - call will be required.
Feedback: Student is under the direct supervision of the attending assigned to the service and will work in close harmony with the resident staff. Student will receive feedback during the entire elective. Senior faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology are available for consultation and planning for individual student needs.
Evaluation: Based on entire elective, concerned with basic skills, application and improvement in student's knowledge of the discipline. A presentation at the end of the rotation will be required. |

The Stamford Hospital Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine consults on and manages high-risk pregnancies for a obstetrical service of approximately 2900 deliveries yearly. The patient population is diverse, and the elective provides the opportunity for senior medical students to participate in management of high risk cases, genetic syndromes, and prenatal diagnosis of fetal anomalies. Emphasis is placed on antepartum evaluation and testing with experience working directly with perinatologists, genetic counselors, antepartum nurse specialists, and residents.
Objectives: Become familiar with antepartum diagnosis and evaluation, counseling, and treatment, medical and surgical complications of pregnancy, including management of the fetus.
Learning Experience: The student is assigned directly to the team of maternal-fetal medicine specialists and participates in all aspects of care: ultrasound, antepartum testing, genetic counseling, high-risk clinic, rounds and conferences.
Feedback: Student will work closely with faculty and residents and will receive feedback during the elective.
