Start Date/Time: First weekday of the month, 6:00 AM
Site/Location: CUMC, Neurological Intensive Care Unit, 8 Garden South, Milstein Hospital
Description: The student receives further exposure to basic neuroscience and clinical neurosurgery.  He should enhance his ability to do a pertinent history and exam and formulate a differential diagnosis and plan of evaluation, including the need for special diagnostic procedures.  Pre- and post-operative neurosurgical problems will be managed.  Exposure to neurosurgical procedures should enhance appreciation of the dynamic interplay of normal and pathological anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, the modification of these forces and patients' reactions to such changes.
Learning experience: The student will participate as a subintern assigned to an attending preceptor and resident team.  He will have an opportunity to evaluate patients in the private office and in the hospital setting, attend scheduled teaching activities, operate with the staff, take regular night call, and closely follow his patients.  Pertinent specific and general references will be provided, and case presentations with appropriate literature review are expected.
Feedback: Continual.
Evaluation: By the involved staff, considering the student's entire performance.
