The Department of Obstetrics at NYPH/CUMC  has the depth and breadth of expertise to meet the individual needs of your pregnancy from start to finish – from routine obstetrical procedures to the highest risk diagnostics and treatments.  With the opening of the Carmen and John Thain Labor and Delivery Unit in January 2004, the Hospital offers a comfortable, family-oriented setting, technologically equipped to handle any birthing situation. Benefits offered include:

• Obstetrical services for both low and high risk pregnancies: There are over 70 affiliated with the Department of Ob/Gyn at NYPH/CUMC. This variety ensures that you will find a physician compatible with your personal preferences clinical needs and insurance requirements.
• Advanced technology for high-risk patients:  Our diagnostic and monitoring capabilities include sophisticated ultrasound and maternal-fetal intensive care. In addition to 10 spacious labor and delivery rooms, six beds are dedicated exclusively to patients requiring high-risk monitoring.  Three state of the art operating rooms are equipped to handle any contingency.
• 24 Hour Obstetrical Anesthesiology: In addition to experience in general anesthesiology, Obstetrical Anesthesiologists are specially trained in obstetrical care.  Ob Anesthesia covers the labor floor around the clock. This means an anesthesiologist is available as soon as the patient and physician need to make adjustments in management pain.
• Neonatal Care Unit:  Should your newborn need special care, you can feel confident that your baby will receive the absolute best care available in the nationally recognized Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital.  The Labor and Delivery Unit sits atop this newly opened state-of-the-art facility.  The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has been recognized as one of the finest in the country.  A transitional nursery is located right on the L&D floor and is staffed by the same renowned neonatal team that provide care in the main NICU unit.
• Nursing Excellence – The Nurses in the Thain Labor Unit have significant training and experience in high risk obstetrical care. Each one is a Registered Nurse and is certified in specialized skills such as fetal monitoring and resuscitation.
• Convenient care at locations city-wide. Our obstetricians and gynecologists practice at locations throughout the metropolitan area, including Riverdale, the Upper East Side, the Columbia-Presbyterian medical campus and northern Manhattan. That means your prenatal, childbirth education, and perinatal care will be convenient and easily accessible.

In addition to the Carmen and John Thain Labor and Delivery Unit, the Department also offers the option for low-risk patients to deliver at the Allen Pavilion.  The OB/GYN Department at the Allen Pavilion is a full service facility for obstetrical patients, providing excellence in ante-partum, intrapartum and post-partum care to about 2800 women each year. The facility is staffed with highly trained physicians (obstetricians, neonatologists and anesthesiologists), midwives and nurses.

The Labor and Delivery suite features an admission/triage area, nine LDRs and two surgical suites for c/sections. The newly decorated LDRs are spacious with private baths. Located in Northern Manhattan, the Allen Pavilion is convenient to Riverdale and Westchester.  Ample parking is available.
