How to apply

From the Pediatric Neurology Program Director

Marc C. Patterson, MD, FRACPThank you for your interest in the Pediatric Neurology training program at the Neurological Institute of New York and the Children's Hospital of New York at Columbia University Medical Center. The program at Columbia was the first to be established with the support of an NIH training grant, and has produced a distinguished cohort of graduates, many of whom have risen to lead child neurology programs throughout the United States and overseas. The program emphasizes a strong grounding in clinical neurology and neuroscience, with outstanding opportunities to participate in clinical and bench research. The division draws on the strengths of the adult services at the Neurological Institute, and the comprehensive facilities in the newly opened Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian.

Advances in genetics and other neurosciences have highlighted the complexity and challenges of the developing human nervous system, and emphasize the exciting opportunities for progress in the discipline of child neurology in the 21st century. There has never been a better time to begin training in this fascinating and rewarding specialty.

Claudia Chiriboga, MD, MPH
Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology and Pediatrics
Interim Director, Division of Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Neurology Training Program

Requirements and Overview

Before entering the Pediatric Neurology Residency, applicants must complete two years of preliminary training through one of three options: (1) two years of residency training in pediatrics in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited program; (2) one postgraduate residency year in internal medicine plus one year of pediatric residency; or (3) one year of pediatric residency and one year of basic neuroscience training. The first year of the pediatric neurology residency is spent on the adult neurology service and is very similar to the first year of the adult program. The subsequent two years are devoted to pediatric neurology and include six months on the pediatric inpatient ward service, six months on the consultation service, and three months on the neuropathology service. The remaining months are for clinical electives or research. In addition, the Department offers a basic neuroscience pediatric neurology research track funded by a Neuroscience Academic Development Award from the NIH.

All applicants must apply using the Central Application Service (CAS) via the www.sfmatch.org website. Child Neurology positions not filled through the match will be available in accordance with SFMP guidelines; inquiries should be directed to the program coordinator.

In general, positions in the Columbia University Pediatric Neurology Residency program are available three years in advance, although occasional earlier vacancies occur.
