The Department of Neurology at Columbia University welcomes visiting medical students from other institutions and countries. The Department of Neurology offers three types of electives for visiting students: advanced clerkship ("subinternship"), clinical electives, and observerships. Visiting medical students are eligible for a neurology elective at Columbia if there is a reciprocal arrangement between the two schools, and there is adequate availability.
If you are interested in setting up an elective in neurology, you must make all arrangements through the Office of Academic Affairs, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. The electives coordinator is Ms. Val Ambrose, and information regarding electives is available at this link:

Descriptions of each elective, pre-requisites, and information about our evaluation procedures are available through the medical school. In advance of your elective, a confirmation will be sent, as well as information about starting the rotation, including the location and time.
It is important to note that electives for medical students are not set up through Columbia's core clerkship in neurology or the Neurology Residency Program. In addition, observerships must be arranged by visiting students themselves through contact with individual faculty. Evaluations of elective student performance are provided by the Columbia faculty, but
it is the responsibility of each visiting student to ensure that the required forms are received, completed and returned to their medical school in a timely manner.
