The Department of Microbiology & Immunology holds a number of regularly scheduled seminars and less formal data clubs. A departmental seminar given by an outside speaker is held on Wednesdays between 12 noon and 1 p.m. in Room 301 of the Hammer Health Sciences Center. A seminar at which students and postdoctoral fellows present their work is held on Fridays between 3 and 4 p.m. in Room 1504 of Hammer, followed by an informal Happy Hour sponsored by the department. In addition, less formal data and journal clubs meet throughout the week to discuss the cell cycle, immunology, prokaryotic molecular biology, virology, and yeast molecular biology.

Students in the department host the Richard C. Parker Memorial Lecture, which is held once each year in memory of the former faculty member. The students select the speaker and arrange a schedule of meetings with the students. In connection with this lecture, each year an outstanding student near completion of their Ph.D. thesis receives the Richard C. Parker Memorial Award.

The department organizes the Heidelberger-Kabat Distinguished Lecture in Immunology annually, in memory of Dr. Elvin Kabat, a former faculty member, and his mentor, Dr. Michael Heidelberger. The Heidelberger-Kabat Lecture has become one of the country's premier forums for the discussion of new developments and discoveries in immunochemistry.
