Residency Training Program
Columbia University (CU) seeks highly motivated veterinarians interested in a Residency in Comparative Medicine. Comparative Medicine focuses on phenomena basic to disease in all species, including humans.

The Residency is offered in different formats (see below) at the Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM) at Columbia University Medical Center. It is designed to prepare veterinarians for a career in laboratory animal medicine. The Residency is accredited by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). All residents have an opportunity to gain experience in an academic and in a corporate environment through:

  • hands on rotations in Comparative Clinical Services (ICM)
  • participation in protocol review and IACUC deliberations
  • design and implementation of a research project
  • didactic instruction and participation in rounds and seminars

1. Residency - Main Track

This is a 3 year program with didactic, research and experiential components. Residents rotate through Comparative Clinical Services (ICM) (surgery, medicine, pathology and research) and have a rotation at a pharmaceutical company.

2. Residency - Degree Program

For qualifying residents, it is possible, simultaneously with (1), to participate in a post-graduate program at CU, such as a Masters of Public Health.

3. Residency- Two Year Option

A two year program is possible when the applicant has already satisfied the ACLAM requirement for research training, and has published an acceptable paper in a peer reviewed journal.

Preference is given to candidates who:

  • are veterinarians licensed in the U.S. and eligible for a license in New York State
  • have a strong commitment to ACLAM Board-certification

Columbia University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
